Friday 6-5-09
We've been using Fridays as "Goal Days", the rest of the week I plan each event for the kids but Fridays are theirs to work what they choose to work. Today had some pretty cool stuff. Ellie has improved her back hip circle so that she can start to pull her hips away from the bar. Maddie and Dom did some flyaways off the low bar. Kylie did her first cast to flyaways. Rachael did tsuks over the cheese mat without a spot and did a giant with virtually no spot and was close to landing a couple of full twisting layouts. Alli did some great 1/2 twisting layouts. Jessi is continually moving her handstand to back handspring up to higher beams.
Then we conditioned...
Today for the conditioning at the end we did a fun little 10 minute workout. The goal was to do as many rounds as possible in 10 minutes. One round was 5 pull ups, 10 push ups, 15 air squats. The scores are below.
Cari 10 Rounds
Alli 8 Rounds
Ellie 9 Rounds
Kylie 12 Rounds
Jessi 10 Rounds
Jordan 12 Rounds
Rachael 13 Rounds
Dom 11 Rounds
Dan 10 Rounds
Can't wait to see everyone on Sunday at the Banquet!

Tuesday 5-19-09
Today was a great workout! Lots of skill work accomplished!! Maddy did her first back tuck on the tumble trak without a spot and Cari did her first giant without spot. The level 5's got their first training with flyaways and the girls did personal record (PR) workout on beam, meaning they did 5 of a next level skill on a beam higher than they previously had, everyone set a couple of PR's tonight! Awesome job girls.

Level 4 State Championships
WAY TO GO LEVEL 4'S!!!!!
The Level 4 Team place 4th at the 2009 New Hampshire State Championships held at Granite State. This was a great competition, there was only two tenths of a point between 2nd and 4th and only about one point between 4th and 1st place. There was a lot of great level 4 gymnastics. Below are the results and places of all the Spectrum Level 4's. We also had State Champions in Christina Marra (vault, bars, floor, all-around), Delaney Conway (Vault).
Delaney Conway Vault 9.7 1st, Bars 9.55 2nd, Beam 9.275 2nd, Floor 9.4 4th, All-Around 37.825 2nd.

Excerpt from Mastery by George Leonard
I intend to read this book ASAP just from this excerpt which embodies the attitude necessary for any athlete, especially a competitive gymnast.
"Genius will come to naught or will burn out quickly if you don't choose the masters journey. This journey will take you along a path that is both arduous and exhilarating. It will bring you unexpected heartaches and unexpected rewards and you will never reach a final destination. (It would be a paltry skill that could be finally and completely mastered.) You'll probably learn as much about yourself as the skill you're pursuing. And although you'll often be surprised at what and how you learn, your progress toward master will almost always take on a characteristic rhythm that looks something like this:

THE MASTERY CURVE
There's really no way around it, learning any new skill relatively brief bursts of progress each of which is followed by a slight decline into a plateau somewhat higher in most cases than the one that preceded it. The curve above is necessarily idealized. In the actual learning experience progress is less regular; the upward spurts vary; the plateaus have their own dips and rises along the way. But the general progression is almost always the same. To take the masters journey you must practice diligently striving to hone your skills, to attain new levels of competence. But while doing so-and this is the inexorable fact of the journey-you have to be willing to spend most of your time on the plateau, to keep practicing even when you feel you are getting nowhere.
How do you move toward mastery? To put it simply you practice diligently, but you practice primarily for the sake of practice itself. Rather than being frustrated while being on the plateau you learn to appreciate and enjoy it as much as the upward surges."

Wendesdays Workout
Tonight was pretty cool, Rachael Grady did her first full floor routine with all her tumbling with her music (thanks Emily Myers for help with that) and Alli Yennaco has a full bar routine! The Level 6's did a fantastic job vaulting over the table with the table on 5 (that's 125 centimeters) considering they've been vaulting on 2 (115 centimeters) for most of the year. Also the level 4's started vaulting over the table this week and all I can say is WOW! they're doing a great job!

Why Gymnastics
WHY GYMNASTICS?
(taken from United States Elite Coaches Association)
1. Gymnastics like most sports, is anaerobic. While aerobic sports have many benefits, one of the primary assets of gymnastics is the wide variety of movements that gymnasts perform and the high levels of strength required.
2. Gymnasts are among the strongest, bound for pound, and the most flexible of all Olympic athletes. Regular stretching has been shown to be related to reduced injury potential.
3. Gymnasts are strong in “relative strength” – strength relative to their size and weight.
4. Gymnasts tend to be strong in the upper body which is usually neglected in other sports.
5. Gymnasts tend to exceptional at static and dynamic balance.
6. Gymnasts learn to fall safely and avoid injury.
7. Gymnastics is a reasonably safe sport. Gymnastics has led American sport in safety certification. All competitive gymnastics coaches must be safety certified.
8. Gymnasts tend to have the strongest bones of all athletes.
9. Gymnasts tend to do very well in school, as shown by All-Academic Teams and Academic All-Americans.
10. Gymnastics scholarships are available from a number of Division I and II universities. Many young gymnasts receive a scholarship award that pays for their entire college education.
11. Gymnasts achieve the old fashioned way – they earn it with hard work that requires months and years of dedicated effort. Long term dedication leads to outstanding character development and citizenship.
12. Gymnastics is a natural environment for teaching youngsters about everything from physics of angular momentum to the history of dance and music. Gymnasts are confronted with the reality of physics on every skill – there is no better laboratory.
13. Gymnastics is an ancient sport with long held traditions of mind and body integration.
14. Gymnastics shares with other sports the assets of helping young people learn about goal setting, how to make sound academic choices, how to budget time, and how to use personal discipline to achieve lofty goals.
